Development of an activation retort

The company Carbonauten (coordinator) own a technology that allows the production of biochar on a relatively small scale and at the same time at low cost. Retorts are used, which are placed on the basic modules. Based on this principle and compatible with the existing technology, retorts are to be developed that enable activation of the coal with steam to produce activated coal. For this purpose, the experience of the University of Hohenheim, Department of Conversion Technologies of Renewable Resources (KT), in the field of coal production, activation and application of activated carbons will be used.

The overall objective is to establish decentralized facilities for the production of activated carbon in Baden-Württemberg. In the sense of a circular bioeconomy, regionally produced biomass residual flows are also used regionally. The production of activated carbon removes carbon from the biomass from the carbon cycle for a long time. The replacement of fossil activated carbon saves CO2 emissions and new sources of income are created in rural areas.
